Haru 2024 Rikishi Preview

We are one week away from live sumo for Haru 2024! You can sign up to play Fantasy Basho now on Fantasizr. Use the below rikishi preview to choose your squad---or just to occupy your time until the action starts.

-------------------------------------------------------------

01 Yokozuna East Terunofuji

Terunofuji Haruo | 照ノ富士 春雄

Isegahama | Mongolia

Birthdate: November 29, 1991

Height: 192 cm | 6' 4""

Weight: 174 kg | 384 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Yokozuna East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 13-2 Yusho

The Kaiju came back for Day One, looked shaky over the first week and then was in top gear for a convincing 13-2 and his 9th Emperor's Cup. He proved once again that no one can touch him over the full 15 days when he's healthy. Now he just needs to prove he can stay healthy and avoid the small wobbles like his losses to Wakamotoharu and Shodai. Still, Terunofuji is the favorite as long as he can mount the dohyo.

02 Ozeki #1 East Kirishima

Kirishima Tetsuo | 霧島 鐵雄

Michinoku | Mongolia

Birthdate: April 24, 1996

Height: 186 cm | 6' 1""

Weight: 143 kg | 315 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Ozeki #1 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 11-4

Well, he didn't make it to Yokozuna after winning in November, but he did get a respectable 11-4. That's par for the course for an Ozeki, and Kirishima will be back as one of the main competitors for the Yusho. Perhaps he never will make Yokozuna, but a strong Ozeki career looks on tap for now."

03 Ozeki #1 West Hoshoryu

Hoshoryu Tomokatsu | 豊昇龍 智勝

Tatsunami | Mongolia

Birthdate: May 22, 1999

Height: 188 cm | 6' 2""

Weight: 142 kg | 313 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Ozeki #1 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 10-4-1

Hoshoryu missed Days 14 and 15, throwing a massive wrench in the yusho race. He was in that yusho race up to that point, and his knee injury was mostly a small worry not a long-term problem. The 24-year-old might still have one more leap in his sumo, but he is already a sumo star and yusho contender.

04 Ozeki #2 East Takakeisho

Takakeisho Takanobu | 貴景勝 貴信

Tokiwayama | Hyogo

Birthdate: August 5, 1996

Height: 175 cm | 5' 9""

Weight: 165 kg | 364 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Ozeki #2 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 2-2-11

After two matches, Takakeisho looked good and like he would be competing with the Yokozuna and fellow Ozeki over all of Hatsu. Then he pulled out of Day Three with a reaggravation of the pinched nerve in his neck. The three-time yusho winner is still there, but he is also now marking his eighth time being kadoban as an Ozeki.

05 Ozeki #2 West Kotonowaka

Kotonowaka Masahiro | 琴ノ若 傑太

Sadogatake | Chiba

Birthdate: November 19, 1997

Height: 189 cm | 6' 2""

Weight: 176 kg | 388 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Sekiwake East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 13-2 Jun-Yusho, Technique Prize

Kotonowaka was leading the yusho race for much of Hatsu, then lost to Terunofuji on Day 13 to draw even with the Yokozuna. He remained that way until a playoff decided the basho. Kotonowaka still went home with a Jun-Yusho, a Technique Prize, and, most importantly, an Ozeki promotion. Most excitingly, he is just entering his prime as a 26 year old.

06 Sekiwake East Daieisho

Daieisho Hayato | 大栄翔 勇人

Oitekaze | Saitama

Birthdate: November 10, 1993

Height: 182 cm | 6' 0""

Weight: 164 kg | 362 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Sekiwake West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 9-6

Daieisho has now been a Sekiwake for a full year. No, he hasn't made Ozeki or seriously challenged for a yusho, but don't discount what he's done. He's maintained a winning record for six straight tournaments while only facing the most difficult schedule possible.

07 Sekiwake West Wakamotoharu

Wakamotoharu Minato | 若元春 港

Arashio | Fukushima

Birthdate: October 5, 1993

Height: 187 cm | 6' 2""

Weight: 147 kg | 324 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #1 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 10-5 Outstanding Performance Prize

Wakamotoharu was at Maegashira #1 after his less than stellar performance in November. He looked like his Sekiwake-self again, getting 10 wins punctuated by his first gold star against Terunofuji. He's back in familiar territory and can 100% hold his own.

08 Komusubi East Abi

Abi Masatora | 阿炎 政虎

Shikoroyama | Saitama

Birthdate: May 4, 1994

Height: 186 cm | 6' 1""

Weight: 158 kg | 348 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #2 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 8-7

Abi pushed at the other guy's neck with both arms, danced around the tawara when in trouble, and occasionally pulled out the sidestep. That was worth 8 wins in January, and he sometimes can get more with it. When he's winning with mostly the two-hand thrust, he's a possible contender.

09 Komusubi West Nishikigi

Nishikigi Tetsuya | 錦木 徹也

Isenoumi | Iwate

Birthdate: August 25, 1990

Height: 185 cm | 6' 1""

Weight: 180 kg | 397 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #5 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 8-7

Nishikigi arrested his recent fall by going 8-7. He is still exceedingly nearsighted and wrestles as such. He will bury in and get his arms around the opponent to go by feel as much as sight. And he's found a way to make it work against upper Maegashira.

10 Maegashira #1 East Ura

Ura Kazuki | 宇良 和輝

Kise | Osaka

Birthdate: June 22, 1992

Height: 175 cm | 5' 9""

Weight: 143 kg | 315 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Komusubi West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 6-9

The Sanyaku debut of Ura was largely forgetful, except true to form he executed a rare kimarite on Day Fifteen. (A tsutaezori against Ryuden, go look it up.) The pink one has fallen to Maegashira again, where he will be as irrepressible as always.

11 Maegashira #1 West Asanoyama

Asanoyama Hiroki | 朝乃山 広暉

Takasago | Toyama

Birthdate: March 1, 1994

Height: 189 cm | 6' 2""

Weight: 168 kg | 370 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #7 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 9-3-3

Asanoyama was leading the yusho race through Week One, then went out with a rolled ankle on Day Nine at 7-1. He was out three days before coming back to try for a winning record. He ended on 9 wins, with the promise that he could still be that yusho challenger.

12 Maegashira #2 East Atamifuji

Atamifuji Sakutaro | 熱海富士 朔太郎

Isegahama | Shizuoka

Birthdate: September 3, 2002

Height: 185 cm | 6' 1""

Weight: 176 kg | 388 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #1 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 6-9

January was Atamifuji's wake up call, with a full Sanyaku slate delivering just 6 wins. The big youngster from Isegahama still needs to learn how to consistently perform against the very best. No reason to think he won't get there fairly soon.

13 Maegashira #2 West Meisei

Meisei Chikara | 明生 力

Tatsunami | Kagashima

Birthdate: July 24, 1995

Height: 180 cm | 5' 11""

Weight: 154 kg | 340 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #9 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 9-6

Meisei fell down the Banzuke and achieved a 9-6. Now he gets a ride back up the Banzuke, where he hasn't done so well recently. He is a former Sanyaku man and does have skills, but he is now struggling putting it all together enough.

14 Maegashira #3 East Oho

Oho Konosuke | 王鵬 幸之介

Otake | Tokyo

Birthdate: February 14, 2000

Height: 190 cm | 6' 3""

Weight: 179 kg | 395 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #11 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 10-5

Down at Maegashira #11, Oho put together another strong basho. Now he shoots back up to mid-Maegashira, where he has struggled. There is a high-quality rikishi in Oho, he just needs to get all the pieces working in unison against better competition.

15 Maegashira #3 West Takanosho

Takanosho Nobuaki | 隆の勝 伸明

Tokiwayama | Chiba

Birthdate: November 14, 1994

Height: 183 cm | 6' 0""

Weight: 170 kg | 375 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #12 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 10-5

Takanosho had a quiet 10-5, where he was 8-3 on Day Eleven. Then he lost to Hoshoryu, got removed from contention, and went back to facing lower Maegashira. This is a former Sanyaku man who is yet to turn 30, so he may able to make some more noise in his career.

16 Maegashira #4 East Tobizaru

Tobizaru Masaya | 翔猿 正也

Oitekaze | Tokyo

Birthdate: April 24, 1992

Height: 174 cm | 5' 9""

Weight: 135 kg | 298 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #4 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 7-8

Tobizaru's 7-8 wasn't embarassing or anything, but it does push him just to the edge of the joi-jin line. He may face a few wrestlers below him. That means rikishi who are unaccustomed to his brand of sumo wildness will get a chance at it in March. Have the popcorn ready.

17 Maegashira #4 West Hiradoumi

Hiradoumi Yuki | 平戸海 雄貴

Sakaigawa | Nagasaki

Birthdate: April 20, 2000

Height: 177 cm | 5' 10""

Weight: 135 kg | 298 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #8 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 8-7

Although not blessed with the size of many top rikishi, Hiradoumi has established himself as a Maegashira mainstay before turning 24. His ceiling isn;t the same as some other youngsters, but he's in Makuuchi awhile with some room for more.

18 Maegashira #5 East Midorifuji

Midorifuji Kazunari | 翠富士 一成

Isegahama | Shizuoka

Midorifuji did not have a very nice January, finishing on just five wins. His particular brand of undersized trickery clearly has a ceiling against those men who have both size AND skill. He's at prime age, so he probably doesn't have lots more, but he could make noise with only a little tweak.

19 Maegashira #5 West Onosato

Onosato Daiki | 大の里 泰輝

Nishonoseki | Ishikawa

Birthdate: June 7, 2000

Height: 192 cm | 6' 4""

Weight: 177 kg | 390 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #15 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 11-4 Fighting Spirit Prize

So he was ready for Makuuchi. Onosato made his Maegashira debut by entering himself into the Yusho race. He didn't get there, but he's also 23 and was in his 5th career basho. He struggled with top-rankers, but he also displayed both pushing and grappling techniques along with his incredible size.

20 Maegashira #6 East Tsurugisho

Tsurugisho Momotaro | 剣翔 桃太郎

Oitekaze | Tokyo

Birthdate: July 27, 1991

Height: 185 cm | 6' 1""

Weight: 194 kg | 428 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #11 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 9-6

Tsurugisho is a 33-year-old widebody who has poor lateral movement. He's had a recent career renaissance as he's worked from the premise that's fine because he is so difficult to get around. He won 9 in January, and didn't seem all that flukey.

21 Maegashira #6 West Gonoyama

Gonoyama Toki | 豪ノ山 登輝

Takekuma | Osaka

Birthdate: April 7, 1998

Height: 177 cm | 5' 10""

Weight: 154 kg | 340 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #3 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 5-10

Gonoyama's experience of the joi-jin was not very pleasant, and his 5-10 was a bit of a disaster. That was also his first losing record since September 2022. When he was in Juryo. He isn't super young, but he's deserving of fighting among the best sumo has to offer.

22 Maegashira #7 East Kinbozan

Kinbozan Haruki | 金峰山 晴樹

Kise | Kazakhstan

Birthdate: June 24, 1997

Height: 192 cm | 6' 4""

Weight: 181 kg | 399 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #6 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 7-8

Kinbozan came oh-so-close to a winning record and a chance to shine in the joi-jin in March. Instead, he's still figuring out how to use his good, but not overwhelming in Makuuchi, size to generate wins in the top division.

23 Maegashira #7 West Tamawashi

Tamawashi Ichiro | 玉鷲 一朗

Kataonami | Mongolia

Birthdate: November 16, 1984

Height: 189 cm | 6' 2""

Weight: 174 kg | 384 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #10 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 8-7

Sumo's iron man was 7-3 after ten days and on the fringes of contention. In the final 5 days, he only managed one win. But that means the 39-year-old got a winning record and moves up the Banzuke a small bit. He's still kicking around, pushing closer to forty and sticking his hand in other rikishi's necks.

24 Maegashira #8 East Onosho

Onosho Fumiya | 阿武咲 奎也

Onomatsu | Aomori

Birthdate: July 4, 1996

Height: 177 cm | 5' 10""

Weight: 165 kg | 364 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #14 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 10-5

Onosho had his best basho in a long time. After losing to Kotoshoho on Day One, he brushed aside lower Maegashira to get into Yusho contention. From Day 10 to Day 13, he lost to Kirishima, Terunofuji, Kotonowaka, and Wakamotoharu to end his Cup chances. But just maybe he's found a better form again.

25 Maegashira #8 West Takayasu

Takayasu Akira | 高安 晃

Tagonoura | Ibaraki

Birthdate: February 28, 1990

Height: 188 cm | 6' 2""

Weight: 183 kg | 403 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Komusubi East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 2-4-9

Takayasu made it back to Sanyaku and got injured again pretty quickly. His chance at his first yusho is slipping further away, although he has shown the ability to rack up wins in mid-Maegashira. That is if his body doesn't betray him again.

26 Maegashira #9 East Hokutofuji

Hokutofuji Daiki | 北勝富士 大輝

Hakkaku | Saitama

Birthdate: July 15, 1992

Height: 184 cm | 6' 0""

Weight: 158 kg | 348 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #3 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 4-5-6

Hokutofuji was muddling along and then pulled out with a knee injury after falling hard on Day Eight. Despite being taken to the back in the oversized wheelchair, the medical certificate said he only needed two weeks recovery. If he is back for real in Osaka, this lower rank may see him put it to quite a few people.

27 Maegashira #9 West Kotoshoho

Kotoshoho Yoshinari | 琴勝峰 吉成

Sadogatake | Chiba

Birthdate: August 26, 1999

Height: 191 cm | 6' 3""

Weight: 161 kg | 355 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #14 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 9-6

Kotoshoho once again looked like a real Maegashira after a one-basho trip to Juryo. He actually started 5-1, as he was more likely to be on the front foot early in the basho. If he stays locked in and engaged, he could shoot up the Banzuke quickly.

28 Maegashira #10 East Shodai

Shodai Naoya | 正代 直也

Tokitsukaze | Kumamoto

Birthdate: November 5, 1991

Height: 184 cm | 6' 0""

Weight: 161 kg | 355 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #4 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 4-11

Shodai went 4-11, looking a step slow and out of it for much of January. He also handed Terunofuji one of his two losses. That's the late-stage Shodai in a nutshell: neither the Ozeki-level sekitori he was, nor someone who can be completely dismissed.

29 Maegashira #10 West Mitakeumi

Mitakeumi Hisashi | 御嶽海 久司

Dewanoumi | Nagano

Birthdate: December 25, 1992

Height: 179 cm | 5' 10""

Weight: 170 kg | 375 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #9 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 6-9

MItakeumi still often looks like his Ozeki self, except he is a little bigger and heavier. Leg injuries will do that, plus he's on the wrong side of 30. Yet when he can get a match going his way, he is still capable of solid sumo.

30 Maegashira #11 East Ichiyamamoto

Ichiyamamoto Daiki | 一山本 大生

Hanaregoma | Hokkaido

Birthdate: October 1, 1993

Height: 187 cm | 6' 2""

Weight: 144 kg | 317 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #7 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 5-10

Ichiyamamoto came off a career basho in November and got absolutely blasted back to earth in January. Getting blasted back is kind of the theme of an Ichiyamamoto match, whether he is winning or losing. So at least it will still be a fun ride in each Ichiyamamoto match.

31 Maegashira #11 West Sadanoumi

Sadanoumi Takashi | 佐田の海 貴士

Sakaigawa | Kumamoto

Birthdate: May 11, 1987

Height: 182 cm | 6' 0""

Weight: 142 kg | 313 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #10 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 6-9

At 36, nearly 37, Sadanoumi could be slowing down. Or he could have had one of those basho where a few breaks went against him and he ended up at 6-9 rather than 9-6. If he slides a little more, he's close to Juryo.

32 Maegashira #12 East Shonannoumi

Shonannoumi Momotaro | 湘南乃海 桃太郎

Takadagawa | Kanagawa

Birthdate: April 8, 1998

Height: 193 cm | 6' 4""

Weight: 186 kg | 410 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #6 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 4-11

Shonannoumi, a wrestler who depends more on guts and gall than athleticism, seemed to have real trouble with rikishi figuring him out in January. He could hardly get himself moving forward, and at his size moving backwards is death. He is a smart wrestler and might figure out a brand-new approach.

33 Maegashira #12 West Shimazuumi

Shimazuumi Sora | 島津海 空

Hanaregoma | Kagoshima

Birthdate: May 18, 1996

Height: 174 cm | 5' 9""

Weight: 149 kg | 328 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #17 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 9-6

Shimazuumi debuted alongside Onosato in January, and that's a great way to get overshadowed. Yet the Hanaregoma man accumulated 9 wins in his rookie basho. He is much better on the belt, and he doesn't overwhelm physically, but he can probably stay for a little while.

34 Maegashira #13 East Ryuden

Ryuden Goshi | 竜電 剛至

Takadagawa | Yamanashi

Birthdate: November 10, 1990

Height: 188 cm | 6' 2""

Weight: 155 kg | 342 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #5 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 3-12

Ryuden got a 3-12 after being elevated significantly for January. Of course he did, and now he's at a much lower rank where his make-the-other-guy-all-knotted-up brand of sumo just works much better. Yes, he looked bad for Hatsu, and yes, he could put up some numbers in Haru.

35 Maegashira #13 West Churanoumi

Churanoumi Yoshihisa | 美ノ海 義久

Kise | Okinawa

Birthdate: May 6, 1993

Height: 176 cm | 5' 9""

Weight: 130 kg | 287 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #13 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 7-8

Churanoumi is hanging in still. For a man who made his Makuuchi debut after turning 30, that's really not so bad. He isn't blessed with remarkable athleticism or size (for sumo), but he knows what he's doing enough for lower Maegashira.

36 Maegashira #14 East Nishikifuji

Nishikifuji Ryusei | 錦富士 隆聖

Isegahama | Aomori

Birthdate: July 22, 1996

Height: 184 cm | 6' 0""

Weight: 149 kg | 328 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Juryo #2 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 10-5

Nishikifuji win 10 matches in his trip down to Juryo. Maybe the demotion was a wake up call or he was just getting healthy from minor injuries. Either way, this is a very skilled rikishi who has been as high as Maegashira #3 and could put some wins on the board.

37 Maegashira #14 West Kitanowaka

Kitanowaka Daisuke | 北の若 大輔

Hakkaku | Yamagata

Birthdate: November 12, 2000

Height: 190 cm | 6' 3""

Weight: 146 kg | 322 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Juryo #3 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 10-5

Kitanowaka inverted his disastrous 5-10 from his November Makuuchi debut once he was back in Juryo in January. He is still fairly young and has ideal size, but he needs to show he has more than natural gifts.

38 Maegashira #15 East Myogiryu

Myogiryu Yasunari | 妙義龍 泰成

Sakaigawa | Hyogo

Birthdate: October 22, 1986

Height: 188 cm | 6' 2""

Weight: 156 kg | 344 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #12 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 5-10

Myogiryu's 5-10 once again places him in danger of a Juryo demotion should he get a losing record. The veteran isn't getting any younger, but he's also bounced back from this range a few times recently.

39 Maegashira #15 West Roga

Roga Tokiyoshi | 狼雅 外喜義

Futagoyama | Russia

Birthdate: March 2, 1999

Height: 185 cm | 6' 1""

Weight: 154 kg | 340 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Juryo #3 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 9-6

Roga seemed overwhelmed in his first Makuuchi basho in November. Back in Juryo, he went 9-6. He's got good size and a solid track record, so there's no reason he can't establish himself as a solid Maegashira.

40 Maegashira #16 East Endo

Endo Shota | 遠藤 聖大

Oitekaze | Ishikawa

Birthdate: October 19, 1990

Height: 184 cm | 6' 0""

Weight: 150 kg | 331 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Maegashira #13 West

Hatsu 2024 Record: 5-10

Endo is now in trouble of getting sent to Juryo. Blessed with incredible skill, Endo was never the same since injuries early in his career after he arrived like a comet. Maybe he's just a little hobbled and will improve, but he may also be in a steady decline.

41 Maegashira #16 West Daiamami

Daiamami Genki | 大奄美 元規

Oitekaze | Kagoshima

Birthdate: December 15, 1992

Height: 185 cm | 6' 1""

Weight: 190 kg | 291 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Juryo #1 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 8-7

Daiamami returns to Makuuchi for the first time since July 2022, when he made a one-time appearance and went 2-9-4. His time in Juryo over the last few years does not suggest he'll last long again as a Maegashira. He was a solid Juryo man, so he does have the chance to squeeze out a winning record.

42 Maegashira #17 East Takerufuji

Takerufuji Mikiya | 尊富士 弥輝也

Isegahama | Aomori

Birthdate: April 9, 1999

Height: 184 cm | 6' 0""

Weight: 143 kg | 315 lbs

Hatsu 2024 Rank: Juryo #10 East

Hatsu 2024 Record: 13-2

Takerufuji needed just one basho in Juryo to get up to Makuuchi, since he went 13-2 for the yusho AND some surprising demotions happened. He is 56-8 in a 9 basho pro career after starring at Nihon University, and he's fairly even between pushing and grappling. If you want to nitpick, he doesn't have incredible size and is nearly 25, but those are reasons to wonder about his ultimate ceiling. He should be good from the start.
