Hatsu 2024 Rikishi Preview

We have a week until live sumo kicks off for 2024. While you wait, and after you've signed up for Fantasy Basho on Fantasizr, peruse these short previews of all 42 Makuuchi rikishi.

01 Yokozuna East Terunofuji

Terunofuji Haruo | 照ノ富士 春雄

Isegahama | Mongolia

Birthdate: November 29, 1991

Height: 192 cm | 6' 4"

Weight: 174 kg | 384 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Yokozuna East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 0-0-15

Terunofuji seems like he may never be able to compete in a full tournament again. He also seems like he definitely wants to compete in one more tournament. Hatsu is probably not it, but he's going to come back when he's feeling his best and he is still a generational talent.

02 Ozeki #1 East Kirishima

Kirishima Tetsuo | 霧島 鐵雄

Michinoku | Mongolia

Birthdate: April 24, 1996

Height: 186 cm | 6' 1"

Weight: 143 kg | 315 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Ozeki #1 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 13-2 Y

Can he do it? After a convincing 13-2 Yusho, Kirishima is poised for a possible Yokozuna promotion if he can repeat. A year ago, his Ozeki chances seemed like a longshot. After a year of excellent, no mistake sumo, Kirishima is the best rikishi currently competing and may reach sumo's highest rank.

03 Ozeki #1 West Hoshoryu

Hoshoryu Tomokatsu | 豊昇龍 智勝

Tatsunami | Mongolia

Birthdate: May 22, 1999

Height: 188 cm | 6' 2"

Weight: 142 kg | 313 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Ozeki #2 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 10-5

Hoshoryu is slightly overshadowed by the other Ozeki's Yokozuna runs and the outstanding recent performances of younger rikishi. This is still a 24 year old Ozeki with a yusho to his name. He is likely not even near his best form as a rikishi, which will happen when he combines his skillset with consistency and stability.

04 Ozeki #2 West Takakeisho

Takakeisho Takanobu | 貴景勝 貴信

Tokiwayama | Hyogo

Birthdate: August 5, 1996

Height: 175 cm | 5' 9"

Weight: 165 kg | 364 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Ozeki #1 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 9-6

The Yokozuna hopes went bust for Takakeisho, but he got 9 wins after 11 and is competing like an Ozeki. That is actually quite nice for the oft-injured Tokiwayama pusher-thruster. The Battle Hamster has threatened a Yokozuna promotion twice recently, so he is still a yusho threat even if he isn't wearing the rope quite yet.

05 Sekiwake East Kotonowaka

Kotonowaka Masahiro | 琴ノ若 傑太

Sadogatake | Chiba

Birthdate: November 19, 1997

Height: 189 cm | 6' 2""

Weight: 176 kg | 388 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Sekiwake #2 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 11-4 Jun-Yusho, Kanto-sho

Coming into Kyushu, Kotonowaka needed 13 wins to get a clear Ozeki promotion and 12 to force a conversation. He got 11 and a Jun-Yusho, but kept the same scenario for a promotion during Hatsu. His great size and excellent fundamentals are now being coupled with a decisiveness at the start and power when he needs it.

06 Sekiwake West Daieisho

Daieisho Hayato | 大栄翔 勇人

Oitekaze | Saitama

Birthdate: November 10, 1993

Height: 182 cm | 6' 0"

Weight: 164 kg | 362 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Sekiwake #1 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 9-6

Daieisho went 60-30 in calendar year 2023 with a Jun-Yusho. That wasn't enough to get the pusher an Ozeki promotion, but he's a firm Sekiwake. Any Ozeki (or other yusho contenders) are going to face an extremely tough out when they face Daieisho.

07 Komusubi East Takayasu

Takayasu Akira | 高安 晃

Tagonoura | Ibaraki

Birthdate: February 28, 1990

Height: 188 cm | 6' 2"

Weight: 183 kg | 403 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #3 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 10-5

Takayasu is quietly back to the top of the Banzuke. A 33 year old with his injury history is on borrowed time, but he has shown a remarkable ability to make the most of the time he has on the dohyo. He is still holding on to the title of "Best to Never Win a Yusho," which is the superlative any rikishi would most want to lose.

08 Komusubi West Ura

Ura Kazuki | 宇良 和輝

Kise | Osaka

Birthdate: June 22, 1992

Height: 175 cm | 5' 9""

Weight: 143 kg | 315 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegshira #1 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 8-7

Ura's made it to Sanyaku! This is a career high rank for the Pink Prince of Techniques, coming after disastrous knee injuries that sent him all the way to Jonidan. There's no reason to expect a slightly wild 31 year old to dominate in the named ranks, but Ura's career has been full of surprises.

09 Maegashira #1 East Wakamotoharu

Wakamotoharu Minato | 若元春 港

Arashio | Fukushima

Birthdate: October 5, 1993

Height: 187 cm | 6' 2"

Weight: 147 kg | 324 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Sekiwake #1 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 6-9

The Sekiwake career of Wakamotoharu has ended for now. After four straight basho at Sumo's third-highest rank, the middle Onami brother has, like younger sibling Wakatakakage, left behind a legacy of not quite being an Ozeki. So let's once again praise an Arashio-beya wrestler for getting here against the odds through a sumo based on never beating yourself and never backing down.

10 Maegashira #1 West Atamifuji

Atamifuji Sakutaro | 熱海富士 朔太郎

Isegahama | Shizuoka

Birthdate: September 3, 2002

Height: 185 cm | 6' 1"

Weight: 176 kg | 388 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #8 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 11-4 Jun-Yusho; Kanto-Sho

Atamifuji just had back to back Jun-Yusho campaigns, and the last three Maegashira to do that were Takayasu (a former Ozeki), Abi (a former Yusho winner), and Shodai (a soon-to-be Ozeki.) Oh, and he had just turned 21, which means his future is almost entirely ahead of him. He even has shades of stablemate Terunofuji in his ability to wrest control of a match. This guy's ceiling is as high as anyone's.

11 Maegashira #2 East Midorifuji

Midorifuji Kazunari | 翠富士 一成

Isegahama | Shizuoka

Birthdate: August 30, 1996

Height: 171 cm | 5' 7"

Weight: 116 kg | 256 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #5 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 9-6

Midorifuji gets another chance to do well in the joi-jin, something he has not been able to do yet in his career. He did get 9 wins in Kyushu without using his signature katasukashi, or under shoulder swing down. Perhaps that means he has figured out some other tricks to get some victories.

12 Maegashira #2 West Abi

Abi Masatora | 阿炎 政虎

Shikoroyama | Saitama

Birthdate: May 4, 1994

Height: 186 cm | 6' 1"

Weight: 158 kg | 348 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Komusubi East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 6-9

Abi bumped up to Komusubi and immediately got a 6-9 record. Now that he is down to Maegashira again, he may go 9-6. That is sort of the way it is for Abi now, whose windmill sumo backed up by fancy dancing at the edge is basically even against the top of the Banzuke.

13 Maegashira #3 East Gonoyama

Gonoyama Toki | 豪ノ山 登輝

Takekuma | Osaka

Birthdate: April 7, 1998

Height: 177 cm | 5' 10"

Weight: 154 kg | 340 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #4 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 8-7

We are still waiting on Gonoyama's first Makuuchi make-koshi. This is actually a big deal, because Kyushu was when he first saw a decent amount of Sanyaku. His 8 wins included victories over Kirishima and Takakeisho on back-to-back days, showing he can stick with the top men in sumo.

14 Maegashira #3 West Hokutofuji

Hokutofuji Daiki | 北勝富士 大輝

Hakkaku | Saitama

Birthdate: July 15, 1992

Height: 184 cm | 6' 0""

Weight: 158 kg | 348 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Komusubi West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 5-10

Hokutofuji certainly earned his Komusubi slot for Kyushu, but he proved to be not up to it, This is a big, veteran sekitori, so he certainly can perform well again after a demotion. Yet that is probably who he is now, which means he's a fun gatekeeper making everyone deal with a heavy duty thrusting attack.

15 Maegashira #4 East Tobizaru

Tobizaru Masaya | 翔猿 正也

Oitekaze | Tokyo

Birthdate: April 24, 1992

Height: 174 cm | 5' 9"

Weight: 135 kg | 298 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #3 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 7-8

The most surprising part of Tobizaru's 7-8 at Kyushu was that he didn't also pick up a win over an Ozeki or Sekiwake. Tobizaru is a little undersized compared to most Sanyaku opponents, but his tricks and desire to try whatever means he can often pull the upset. A fall back to mid-Maegashira may now see him get more success.

16 Maegashira #4 West Shodai

Shodai Naoya | 正代 直也

Tokitsukaze | Kumamoto

Birthdate: November 5, 1991

Height: 184 cm | 6' 0"

Weight: 161 kg | 355 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #2 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 6-9

Sumo's Lord of Chaos has been displaying his chaos more and more by getting surprise wins after looking terrible. Shodai's Ozeki form, withstand the tachiai and dominate when the other guy makes adjustments, is still there in a shadow form. Unfortunately, he is more often losing the tachiai and desperately making his own adjustments more and more.

17 Maegashira #5 East Ryuden

Ryuden Goshi | 竜電 剛至

Takadagawa | Yamanashi

Birthdate: November 10, 1990

Height: 188 cm | 6' 2"

Weight: 155 kg | 342 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #10 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 10-5

Ryuden had an outside shot at a Yusho in the final few days. That is a testament to his ability to make anyone uncomfortable and win a match the hard way. Now, he didn't win a Yusho because he always has to win the hard way, and that gets even harder against the top contenders.

18 Maegashira #5 West Nishikigi

Nishikigi Tetsuya | 錦木 徹也

Isenoumi | Iwate

Birthdate: August 25, 1990

Height: 185 cm | 6' 1"

Weight: 180 kg | 397 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #4 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 7-8

Nishikigi had a six-win streak followed immediately by a six-loss streak at Kyushu. Overall, his 7-8 feels right. Nishikigi's close-fighting grappling style means he is in every match, but he doesn't quite have the power to dominate everyone.

19 Maegashira #6 East Kinbozan

Kinbozan Haruki | 金峰山 晴樹

Kise | Kazakhstan

Birthdate: June 24, 1997

Height: 192 cm | 6' 4"

Weight: 181 kg | 399 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #7 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 8-7

Kinbozan is big even by sumo standards, although that is not going to keep him moving up higher in Makuuchi. Fortunately for him (and Kise-oyakata), sumo's lone Kazakh has learned how to withstand a tachiai and redirect the fight. He is now on two winning records in a row, and he could start creeping towards upper Maegashira.

20 Maegashira #6 West Shonannoumi

Shonannoumi Momotaro | 湘南乃海 桃太郎

Takadagawa | Kanagawa

Birthdate: April 8, 1998

Height: 193 cm | 6' 4"

Weight: 186 kg | 410 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #6 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 7-8

Two straight 7-8 records aren't how Shonannoumi wanted to end 2023, but after just three Makuuchi basho he is a firm Maegashira. His tremendous size is coupled with a willingness to take whatever match he is given. He is about equal in his career between winning by yorikiri and hatakikomi, which certainly means his matches may be surprising.

21 Maegashira #7 East Ichiyamamoto

Ichiyamamoto Daiki | 一山本 大生

Hanaregoma | Hokkaido

Birthdate: October 1, 1993

Height: 187 cm | 6' 2"

Weight: 144 kg | 317 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #14 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 11-4 Jun-Yusho, Kanto-Sho

Ichiyamamoto came out like a house a-fire in Kyushu, to follow his Juryo Yusho in September. After starting 8-1, he did go 3-3 to wind up with a Jun-Yusho. His sumo is not one that can do much against upper Maegashira and Sanyaku, because he only really can thrust with two arms at full speed. But it sure is fun to watch and he has made a career-best rank.

22 Maegashira #7 West Asanoyama

Asanoyama Hiroki | 朝乃山 広暉

Takasago | Toyama

Birthdate: March 1, 1994

Height: 189 cm | 6' 2"

Weight: 168 kg | 370 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #1 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 4-4-7

After sitting out the first week with a calf injury, Asanoyama returned to beat Takakeisho and then drop his next three matches. He did win his final four matches to go 4-4 in actual competition. The former Ozeki is still looking for his return to Sanyaku after his year-long suspension, and if he is healthy and on-form he could easily do it.

'

23 Maegashira #8 East Hokuseiho

Hokuseiho Osamu | 北青鵬 治

Miyagino | Hokkaido

Birthdate: November 12, 2001

Height: 204 cm | 6' 8"

Weight: 185 kg | 408 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #7 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 7-8

Hokuseiho's remarkable blend of unbelievable size and extremely awkward sumo has yet to work in mid-Maegashira. Of course, he is also barely 22 years old, and his record in the lower divisions has been fantastic. He will likely figure out how to fight Makuuchi men sooner rather than later, although it will be strange to watch no matter what.

24 Maegashira #8 West Hiradoumi

Hiradoumi Yuki | 平戸海 雄貴

Sakaigawa | Nagasaki

Birthdate: April 20, 2000

Height: 177 cm | 5' 10"

Weight: 135 kg | 298 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #11 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 9-6

Hiradoumi is still only 23 and fully establishing his reputation. His 9-6 in Kyushu helps him stay in Makuuchi, although he has a real puzzle about how to do more. While big for normal humans, he is decidedly below the average for top-division sumo. What he needs to do now is get better at some little-man moves as well as using his surprising strength to manhandle certain opponents.

25 Maegashira #9 East Mitakeumi

Mitakeumi Hisashi | 御嶽海 久司

Dewanoumi | Nagano

Birthdate: December 25, 1992

Height: 179 cm | 5' 10"

Weight: 170 kg | 375 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #9 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 8-7

Mitakeumi has sort of, kind of found his footing after crashing out of Ozeki (and Sanyaku) due to injury. He still looks like he is in trouble when he gets even a little off balance, but he also can control a match when he gets his grip. For Hatsu and all of 2024, his success will lie in making sure he can fight his match.

26 Maegashira #9 West Meisei

Meisei Chikara | 明生 力

Tatsunami | Kagashima

Birthdate: July 24, 1995

Height: 180 cm | 5' 11"

Weight: 154 kg | 340 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #2 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 4-11

Meisei had a Kyushu to forget. This is a 28 year old former Sankyaku man who seems like he should be able to make noise at the top of the Banzuke again. He just seems to have real problems taking it to the very best wrestlers in sumo.

27 Maegashira #10 East Tamawashi

Tamawashi Ichiro | 玉鷲 一朗

Kataonami | Mongolia

Birthdate: November 16, 1984

Height: 189 cm | 6' 2"

Weight: 174 kg | 384 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #12 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 9-6

Tamawashi was in danger of heading back to Juryo, but, as he has for over a decade, he stayed in Makuuchi. There is no surprise to Tamawashi, as he comes head on with a right hand to the other guy's face. But he's been doing it since many opponents were still in school and he's planning on doing it for a lot longer.

28 Maegashira #10 West Sadanoumi

Sadanoumi Takashi | 佐田の海 貴士

Sakaigawa | Kumamoto

Birthdate: May 11, 1987

Height: 182 cm | 6' 0"

Weight: 142 kg | 313 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #11 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 8-7

Sadanoumi is still here. At 36, and unlike other senior members of Makuuchi, he has never had a Sanyaku rank in his time in sumo. He has had a steady career, with an ability to hang in there as a Maegashira for years.

29 Maegashira #11 East Tsurugisho

Tsurugisho Momotaro | 剣翔 桃太郎

Oitekaze | Tokyo

Birthdate: July 27, 1991

Height: 185 cm | 6' 1"

Weight: 194 kg | 428 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegshira #13 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 9-6

Now in his 30s, Tsurugisho is keeping going in the lower Maegashira ranks by simple sumo physics. It is just extremely hard to shift this much weight with this low a center of gravity. Of course, he also knows how to beat someone who gets stalled, but he's not really blowing anyone away at the tachiai.

30 Maegashira #11 West Oho

Oho Konosuke | 王鵬 幸之介

Otake | Tokyo

Birthdate: February 14, 2000

Height: 190 cm | 6' 3"

Weight: 179 kg | 395 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #12 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 8-7

8-7 would seem to show Oho is improving his consistency, but he did have a four match win streak and two three match losing streaks. Physically, Oho is a model sumo wrestler, and he should dominate. Unfortunately, his sumo is a step slow due to his frequent indecisiveness on the dohyo.

31 Maegashira #12 East Takanosho

Takanosho Nobuaki | 隆の勝 伸明

Tokiwayama | Chiba

Birthdate: November 14, 1994

Height: 183 cm | 6' 0"

Weight: 170 kg | 375 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #6 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 5-6-4

Takanosho pulled out of the basho after Day Ten, although he looked bad well before then. This is a former Sekiwake who has not yet hit his 30th birthday. Yet injuries clearly have robbed him of the ability to compete at his very best, and he is recovering from another one.

32 Maegashira #12 West Myogiryu

Myogiryu Yasunari | 妙義龍 泰成

Sakaigawa | Hyogo

Birthdate: October 22, 1986

Height: 188 cm | 6' 2"

Weight: 156 kg | 344 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #9 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 6-9

6-9 isn't spectacular, but for a 37 year old Maegashira who has occasionally seen a drop to Juryo coming soon it's pretty good. Myogiryu's style is still based on a kind of wild bull rush. Yet the veteran savvy comes from knowing exactly what he can and can't do.

33 Maegashira #13 East Churanoumi

Churanoumi Yoshihisa | 美ノ海 義久

Kise | Okinawa

Birthdate: May 6, 1993

Height: 176 cm | 5' 9"

Weight: 130 kg | 287 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #15 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 9-6

Churanoumi made his debut in Makuuchi as an undersized 30 year old reliant on pushing techniques, and he somehow got a 9-6. He may be able to stick, because he's diversified his sumo as he's gotten older. This is also his chance to make a bigger name for himself in sumo history.

34 Maegashira #13 West Endo

Endo Shota | 遠藤 聖大

Oitekaze | Ishikawa

Birthdate: October 19, 1990

Height: 184 cm | 6' 0"

Weight: 150 kg | 331 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #8 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 5-10

Endo had a very bad basho in Kyushu, which seems to be happening to him every so often recently. He does also seem to be able to bounce back from them to hang around .500. Few rikishi have the range of skills Endo posesses, so even as he ages and loses a step he can hang.

35 Maegashira #14 East Kotoshoho

Kotoshoho Yoshinari | 琴勝峰 吉成

Sadogatake | Chiba

Birthdate: August 26, 1999

Height: 191 cm | 6' 3"

Weight: 161 kg | 355 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Juryo #1 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 12-3 Yusho

Kotoshoho was certainly woken up by his drop to Juryo, as he went 12-3 for a Yusho in his brief trip back to the second division. The guy who feels like he should be a dominant sekitori was on display, but against Juryo opponents. He may, like Ichiyamamoto last time out, have been rejuvenated by a Juryo trip.

36 Maegashira #14 West Onosho

Onosho Fumiya | 阿武咲 奎也

Onomatsu | Aomori

Birthdate: July 4, 1996

Height: 177 cm | 5' 10"

Weight: 165 kg | 364 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #5 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 3-12

Onosho's tendency to get too far forward and off balance was too on display during Kyushu. He is possibly going to get double-digit wins after a serious demotion, because 1) lower-Maegashira is easier for strength-of-schedule and 2) he turns it around between bashos sometimes.

37 Maegashira #15 East Tomokaze

Tomokaze Yuta | 友風 勇太

Nishonoseki | Kanagawa

Birthdate: December 2, 1994

Height: 183 cm | 6' 0"

Weight: 168 kg | 370 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #14 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 7-8

Tomokaze returned to Makuuchi in Kyushu, after a long absence due to a terrible injury. He basically proved he can hold a Maegashira place, but just barely. He wasn't an athletic dynamo pre-injury, but now he is in full "knows-what-he's-doing-out-there" mode.

38 Maegashira #15 West Onosato

Onosato Daiki | 大の里 泰輝

Nishonoseki | Ishikawa

Birthdate: June 7, 2000

Height: 192 cm | 6' 4"

Weight: 177 kg | 390 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Juryo #5 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 12-3 Jun-Yusho

There are three reasons to discount Onosato's chance to dominate immediately: 1) At 23, he is not as young as some recent anticipated debuts, 2) He has just four career pro basho, and 3) Dominating immediately is actually extremely difficult. But this is a multiple-time Amateur Yokozuna with a 34-10 career record in Grand Sumo, plus he's got an ideal build. Onosato is someone to watch, and he could deliver immediately.

39 Maegashira #16 East Takarafuji

Takarafuji Daisuke | 宝富士 大輔

Isegahama | Aomori

Birthdate: February 18, 1987

Height: 186 cm | 6' 1"

Weight: 171 kg | 377 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Maegashira #13 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 6-9

Takarafuji is a veteran who now needs a winning record to keep his Maegashira rank he's held since 2012, as he is at the foot of the First Division. He won't beat himself, but it's getting easier to beat him outright. He was in this same spot exactly a year ago, and he stayed in Makuuchi since.

40 Maegashira #16 West Bushozan

Bushozan Kotaro | 武将山 虎太郎

Fujishima | Ibaraki

Birthdate: December 6, 1995

Height: 171 cm | 5' 7"

Weight: 171 kg | 377 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Juryo #2 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 10-5

Bushozan has gone 19-11 in his last two Juryo basho, but also went a combined 8-22 in his two Makuuchi basho. He is also 28, so this is probably who he is. A pusher-thruster without the height or athleticism to dominate top-division opponents. On the other hand, that profile can get winning records in Makuuchi if he can find his sumo.

41 Maegashira #17 East Shimazuumi

Shimazuumi Sora | 島津海 空

Hanaregoma | Kagoshima

Birthdate: May 18, 1996

Height: 174 cm | 5' 9"

Weight: 149 kg | 328 lbs

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Juryo #2 West

Kyushu 2023 Record: 9-6

Shimazuumi is one of those overwhelming yorikiri wrestlers, who seems destined to get in a grappling match. He is in the middle of his prime as a 28 year old, but he's also more than earned a Maegashira rank. The ceiling for a guy like Shimazuumi isn't too high, yet his chance to stick as a Makuuchi wrestler seems pretty good.

42 Maegashira #17 West Aoiyama

Aoiyama Kosuke | 碧山 亘右

Birthdate: June 19, 1986

Kyushu 2023 Rank: Juryo #1 East

Kyushu 2023 Record: 8-7

Aoiyama has returned to Makuuchi after one Juryo basho where he got a bare kachi-koshi from Juryo's top spot. It's not exactly dominating his way back to Maegashira, but we know what the Bulgarian Blue Mountain will do. Still, at 37, he will use his long arms and immense frame to push away at anyone he faces.
