Yusho Arasoi

12 Wins

01 Yokozuna East Terunofuji

11 Wins

20 Maegashira #6 East Takanosho

Notable Maneuvers

Kekaeshi. Technically, that is a "minor inner leg sweep." Really, Tobizaru kicked Oshoma's left leg when they disconnected, and Oshoma went down.

Match of the Day

01 Yokozuna East Terunofuji versus 20 Maegashira #6 East Takanosho

It wasn't spectacular, as the match was basically a grip at the tachiai and a simple yorikiri. When you consider the rikishi's identifies and what it did for the yusho race, this match was huge. Takanosho gets the first kinboshi of Nagoya on Day Fourteen and keeps his yusho chances alive. What a result.

Recap

The Nagoya basho will go to the final day. Everything was set up for the musubi no ichiban to settle the yusho a day early. Instead, Terunofuji just plain couldn't handle Takanosho. Injury concerns have plagued Terunofuji's time as a Yokozuna, but his first week in Nagoya felt like he was able to dominate even if he was hurting. On Day Fourteen, the Kaiju once agin looked like the guy whose lower body problems would zap his upper body strength.

Of course, Teruniofuji had been so dominant that things are still pretty simple for him. He has the lead going into the final day, and if he beats Kotozakura in the final match of the final day, he gets the Emperor's Cup. Even if he loses, Takanosho will need to beat Onosato in his final match to force the playoff. They've seen each other once, in January, and Onosato was the winner. Despite his excellence throughout Nagoya and especially on Day Fourteen, Takanosho is by no means guaranteed a final day win.

Partly that is because Onosato is in the group who still has something to fight for. At 9-5, he likely will not get an Ozeki promotion for September. Getting a 10th win will make his Ozeki promotion still possible for November. Meanwhile, Onosato's fellow Sekiwake and just-0former Ozeki Kirishima is at 7-7. A win will keep him at Sumo's third rank. He'll see another 7-7 rikishi in Tamawashi on Day Fifteen, while the other two 7-7 rikishi, Oshoma and Ichiyamamoto, also square off. All four would love to secure a winning record.

The Juryo demotions are also uncertain. Asanoyama withdrew at a rank and win total that means he goes down. Nishikifuji's losing record at the final Makuuchi spot guarantees his Juryo return. Yet what about Chiyoshoma, who has 5 wins in 9 competitive matches at Maegahsira #15? Another win will possibly save him. At the other end of the Banzuke, Hiradoumi will likely force a Sekiwake spot with 10 wins in his Komusubi debut. Abi and Onosato have already secured their winning records, while Kirishima can get one still. That would mean 4 Sekiwake before considering Takakeisho's demotion from Ozeki.

Yet all eyes will be on the final match on Day Fifteen. This has been Terunofuji's basho throughout the two weeks. He has stumbled at the end just a little bit, but he can still make it his. In the end, lifting the Emperor's Cup is what matters.
